Japan is the Best Travel Destination in 2025

Beatrice Lessi

Japan has been named the best travel destination in 2025 by *Travel Weekly* , a leading global travel publication. I am in Tokyo right now, for the second time, because of the Tokyo Marathon. The second time around (last time it was 7 years ago) the trip looks even better. Why?

Here are 10 reasons to go.

1. Currency Exchange : The exchange rate has made traveling to Japan even more convenient and affordable for tourists.

2. City Improvements : Tokyo has made significant progress in reducing noise, traffic, and enhancing green spaces. The city is incredibly clean, quiet, and orderly. For instance, Shibuya Crossing is the busiest pedestrian crossing in the world, and Shinjuku Station is the busiest train station in the world. Despite this, the city’s efficient management ensures a pleasant experience.

3. Infrastructure: The city’s infrastructure has been upgraded to allow better traffic flow and avoid bottlenecks. The multi-level transportation system can be confusing, with directions on Google Maps not always matching real life. Streets and pathways can be above or below trains, cars, or other streets, making navigation a bit challenging.

4. Trendiness : Tokyo is a hub of modern trends. Take TeamLab, for instance: a digital art museum that draws long queues of young, fashion-forward individuals ready for Instagram-worthy photos and videos. TeamLab is special because it offers an immersive experience where visitors can interact with digital art installations. The artworks change based on the presence and movement of people, creating a unique and dynamic experience every time you visit. Luxury pre-loved and second-hand shops are thriving due to their quality and good prices, and tech shops, including vintage tech, are booming.

5. Architectural Mix : Tokyo’s architecture is a fascinating blend of traditional and modern styles. Skyscrapers feature unique textures and contrasting materials, while tiny restaurants serve next-level sushi, showcasing the city’s culinary excellence.

6. Cultural Etiquette and Community Spirit: Japanese people are well-dressed, in good shape, respectful, and kind. They maintain a high standard of politeness and never talk aggressively, even when mistakes are made. Their culture emphasizes healthy eating from a young age, as seen in their primary school education. Schools have nutritionists who explain the importance of nutrition to children, and by law, school meals are freshly made every day with no processed food. Children are encouraged to eat well and develop healthy habits. Furthermore, the Japanese culture’s respect for the community is evident in their actions. During the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, Japanese fans gained international admiration when they stayed behind to clean up the stadium after all other tourists had left a mess. The video of this act went viral, showcasing their respect and cleanliness, highlighting a culture that deeply values community and collective responsibility.

7. Safety : Japan is one of the safest countries in the world. Crime rates are low, and tourists can explore cities and countryside with peace of mind.

8. Rich History and Culture: Japan offers a deep dive into history and culture, from ancient temples and shrines to modern museums and art galleries. The preservation of traditions alongside contemporary culture creates a unique travel experience.

9. Technology and Innovation : Japan is at the forefront of technological advancements. Visitors can experience cutting-edge technology, from futuristic toilets to high-speed trains and robotic assistants in hotels.

10. Natural Beauty: Japan’s natural landscapes are breathtaking, with stunning cherry blossoms in spring, vibrant autumn foliage, serene beaches, and majestic mountains. The country’s commitment to preserving its natural beauty is evident in its well-maintained parks and nature reserves.

Bonus Point

Karaoke Fun: Karaoke in Japan is a silly, absurd, and incredibly fun experience. Karaoke rooms often have quirky and extravagant decor, sometimes resembling brothels, with microphones that look like vibrators. It’s a fantastic way to spend a loud evening full of laughter with friends, singing your heart out and enjoying the unique atmosphere.

In conclusion, Japan’s blend of modernity and tradition, combined with its improvements in infrastructure, cleanliness, and cultural richness, makes it the best travel destination in 2025. Whether you’re a first-time visitor or returning for another adventure, Japan’s charm and innovation continue to impress and inspire.
