Guess who I met at Deltapark Thun

The lake villas

Splash!

I opened the garage door, and saw a motor boat hanging above the water. The sweet noise of the lake, below, greeted me. Then I saw a big yellow switch and couldn’t resist. I pushed it, and the boat started to move lower.  Delicately, it reached the water surface. Oh my. I should just jump in it, start the engine and forget the rest of the world, I thought. But then I know my driving abilities, so I decided it was better not to risk. I called reception and asked for help. Rudolph Rath, the hotel vice director himself, came together with a technician. Now I had not one, but two drivers. What a treat, enjoying lake Thun that way!

Yes, because at Deltapark Vitalresort Thun, you can see the lake from every angle. It’s up to you how. You can choose between a superior, 4-star Superior room in the main building, or a luxurious 5-star villa that comes with a garage for your car, and another one for your boat. Talk about La dolce vita.

Wanna bet?

I bet you didn’t know this place. It’s relatively new, and the Thun area, for some reason, magically seems to escape the fame (and consequent mass tourism) of Interlaken, which is just 26 km away. But in my opinion, Thun is the most beautiful and interesting  hidden gem in Switzerland.

Deltapark is located between Spiez and Thun, directly on the lake, surrounded by 70,000 square meter park. A unique location and natural reserve, where you can hear the birds and the cow bells from kilometres away. And you might meet the sweetest guest.

Water is life

I learnt it at then Happiness Museum in Copenhagen:

In comparison to being indoors, happiness increases by 2.32 points on the scale from 0-100 when participants are outdoors, and being by a marine or coastal margins increases happiness by 6.02 points.

At Deltapark Thun  there is a bonus on top of that: the nature all around it. With the snow capped mountains as a backdrop,  and the centenarian trees welcoming your walk, there are also some small animals to keep you good company.

Ducks, birds, and squirrels were roaming around. These were the guests I didn’t expect. A squirrel came close to me, unafraid. In the silence of the early morning, here was a perfect moment. It was as healing as having ten hours of therapy.

I stayed there almost mesmerised, but then I checked my watch, since it was almost time for a couple massage with my husband. So I got up, paid a short visit to the very picturesque Sauna Boat (I didn’t even know that such a thing existed), and finally went to the Spa.

Wellness

When I went to the treatment rooms and saw two female massage therapists,  I thought that my husband  – who is a big man, a triathlete, and likes his massage strong – might not be happy. Would this be just a beauty procedure, or could they also deliver a sport massage? Obviously I was asking myself the wrong questions. After one hour of bliss, I opened my eyes. My husband  told me the massage was wonderful, and that his muscle pain was gone.

There was also a lot more to do. If you love wellness, treatments and vitality, the Deltapark Spa offers a variety of experiences:

  • Finnish  sauna
  • herbal cabin
  • scenic showers
  • kneipp treatments by the lake
  • saltwater pool
  • whirlpool
  • outdoor pool
  • private spa  “Swiss Chalet”, “African”, and “Asian” themed
  • light-filled fitness room
  • Technogym equipped gym, with lake view

…and more treatments are coming up.

The food

You might wonder, how is the daily experience at Deltapark? I have many elements to answer that.

The rooms were immaculate, but to be honest that’s not how I judged the place.

Food was an important part of the answer.

Let’s start with breakfast, which was excellent, and offered a magnificent lakeshore view, of course.

Then there were three restaurants to choose from. I tried the Thai restaurant and loved its freshness and the way the dishes were presented. But my real favourite was Restaurant Delta, with its classic flair, and a romantic setting overlooking a beautiful old tree. I had a velvety soup, a vegetarian chili, and my husband tried the veal. Dessert was fresh and tasty, a mango chocolate combo to die for.

The crew

And now the best part about my experience at Deltapark Thun: the people I was with.

The other guests were  a cool crowd, a mix of types, ages and nationalities.

And the hotel team was outstanding.

I fell in love with Kevin Furrer, the hotel director. He knows how to spoil a guest, but at the same time one can feel he is not trying to sell you anything. He was friendly, honest, brilliant, and completely in his element.

One of the receptionists was incredibly patient and helpful. I asked again and again how the gates and keys worked, I am rather clumsy with these things, so she had to repeat the procedures many times, and escorted me all over the place to show me things directly.

The technician, who helped with the boat, was fast and efficient, chatting with me when I wanted to chat, and quiet when I was lost in my world.

Chantal  Lengacher, the sales manager, helped me with pictures for at least two hours, and showed me the property inside out.  Always with a smile.

That’s why what I liked most was meeting  the crew… squirrel included!

Two days felt like a holiday. Thanks to all the people who had a common mission: making me feel home. While being authentic and remaining themselves.
