What to wear at the WEF
B., Zurich
I am going to join a panel at the WEF and would like to avoid the usual black suit. What shall I wear?
A black (or dark) suit is a bit of a uniform for career women, and provide a good solution when in doubt. But if you are looking for something more colorful or feminine, the solutions are endless. Here are some tips to choose your outfit
- Avoid sexiness (anything low cut, over-the-knee boots, excessively short miniskirts, see-through fabric, visible lingerie)
- Try colour (pastels are a good idea, but also a classic red or any colour you feel comfortable in, make a blazer or dress immediately bright and noticeable. Why not using the advantage of being different?)
- Get inspired by internationally recognised career women we see a lot online (Finland PM Sanna Marin, Amal Clooney, Christine Lagarde, Anna Wintour, for example)
- Pay attention to accessories. Bad (ruined, cheap, really boring) shoes are a no-go. Too many accessories like a lot of jewellery aren’t a good idea either.
- Avoid logos
- Try nude shades for tailored shapes – a light beige or pearl grey suit is “serious”, but immediately looks friendlier than the usual black
- Try cardigans instead of blazers – they are softer, more comfortable, more feminine
- Try soft, loose trousers like those I’m wearing in the cover picture
- Go for small patterns rather than big (polka dots, cachemire, small flowers, and so on)
- Show your silhouette or waist, if you are looking for a feminine – but still conservative enough – style
